1.) Talked to Fanny, she is agreeable to me returning the rest of the equipment on Sat after my work. As for the DVD, still have to submit to them on Fri so Calvin take note to give Fanny a call to make an appointment.

I cant meet u guys tmrs as i work til 830pm tmrw and i am doing the night shift :( on Fri. Anyway the film is done wanna show to u guys all before we submit at least.

Hi all,

Long time no update this blog. As the date draws near, this blog will more or less close too. It is a good way for us to post up info for our project and is multimedia savvy enuff for us to post video, pics etc so this is a good idea for any of your future projects.

Saw the 2nd round of photos, Cal ur camera suffer from loss of focus issit hahahaha doesnt seem as sharp compared to your first entry. Just seeing the photos of us stuck in the lift not once but twice makes me boil hahaha. ANyway good job and I want to ask u guys to come out less Andy (who is away on sailing duty) tmrw or Thu night can u guys make it?

Its to show u guys the final cut before submission on Friday. More or less Im happy with the final cut, its not only my own idea, everyone chipped in ideas and thats how the final version comes out and thats important. Will SMS you guys soon.

Cal remember to use only the 2nd set of credits (the one that is slower) and can bullshit more? E.g. put more roles and our names inside haha. You only have one chance to hao lian.

Its a Wrap!

Yo guys, good filming on 3 Nov, with that we shd have covered all scenes necessary, now its up to editing to make it nice and short. Calvin please review the input soon and let us know (touchwood) if there are any emergencies just like the prev one with the bars.

ALso please come up with a date/s for voice over sessions soon. Good job guys! Look forward to more photos here soon. Cal if u have any finish product dun publish it here yet, dun want others to get any ideas from us ya since it is still early to the deadline.

For the ending i tot of cutting the dialogue and replacing it with the hp thing but no dialgoue between Darren and Benny. It will just show Benny voice overing saying things like he was saved by the phone, pple lend him $$ to solve the prob and we show him being back to normal again, and maybe end with him discarding some soccer betting related stuff, the details are still swiming in my head but no worries minor changes i show u the changed ending this sat and see wat u guys think ok?

Dont worry about the mike thing. Remember we can crop the video in Imovie, that should fix the damn thing no need black bars. My personal opinion is not to have the bars because 1.) it is supposed to be a 4:3 format film as stated in the ECA. 2.) black bars take away other necessary video that we have in other shoots.

Lets reserve all judgement til we meet on 3 Nov. It should not be that bad. Dun forget my script has freezes in the script when we intro each and every char. For those who not sure wat i toking about, I will show u some samples at my house, blame me for being a fan of funny movies like kill bill, snatch, lock stock and barrel etc

Can the flaws be salvaged @ the studio?

Hi Darren & Calvin,

I was wondering if the flaws could be corrected @ the studio? If the flawed segment means a lot to tell the story, I guess the best way is to edit the flawed part @ the studio. Remember they mentioned abt letting us use the studio to do extra effect limited on IMOVIE? Well, wat do u think? They should have the capability to crop the defect part of the footage away. Then we no need to re-take & waste our effort also.

But Darren you gotta see all the raw footage and make the right judgement. Then contact that specky video guy(forgot his name) for help and advise. Calvin, wat u think? since you are doing the shack part(editing)... don want u to waste ur effort also.

Like i said, if we want the entire film will have to be black bar through out. As for the size of the bar, can we make it thicker, just like 16:9 widescreen. But last night i played around with the iMovie like cannot lehzzzzzz

yo guys...i agreed wif darren we got good, interesting script, dun let it go to waste...we can go ahead on nov 3 to shoot e remaining scenes,
then if we got time, we can consider to reshoot those crucial scenes which are flawed....else we try use the letterbox effect...or i am sure so many of us, sure can think of sth...to make amends...

aft this lst day of e filming, personally i felt our production will overrun 5mins...but we can discuss n edit all e scenes together....we can speed up and omit some scenes....what majority of u guys think?

the shots breakdown.

firstly i need to say this after reviewing the shots taken....
most of them had been scrap out cos of either reflection or mic or sound.

the part of leslie and andy part with the boom mic and mic pole coming in. honestly if we are going to give those marks to them. it will take away alot and to me i would rather not have the boom mic in there. tts why i suggest putting the black bar and make it look like some announcement which u had intended to. For the part of putting the black bar, I feel that this must be discussed with the group and come to the decision on putting the bar or not.

the clock part is shakey even when i see it i can see the cam move.

how abt these i am going to do a break down of all the shots and you guys take a look.

Clock
- shot is shakey and deem to be too blur even.

Andy in the bathroom
- the side shot and the front view shot do not match.
-side shot he is whistling
-front view shot he is not.

Andy and Leslie at kopitiam
- boom mic and pole appear in the scene where leslie comes in and sit.
- When it was good sound, Leslie said the wrong words in script. 'Jia gui is eat ball' but he said 'Jia gui is Eat gui'.
- in the two shots you guys taken both got mic appearing.

- All is fine for the shots

Andy and new car in carpark
- When Andy drives off, reflection of US were shown and even cam man at the boot. (this is the second shot after Jo's reflection appear)

- When Jo drives off, Darren and cam were seen. Not sure if that is buffer zone.

So guys from the breakdown, to me I feel that the front part if we have too many mistakes then its no point continuing as They will see those. Its obvious to me when i import the videos and fine it disturbing.

But if the majority of the group decides to keep the flaws in there. I will just go with the flow. I am just giving my 2 cents worth.

If possible I will try to arrange a day before 3 nov and show u all the video and u all decide.

Else I think I will stop editing for now.

Cal if only the paiseh paiseh scene got kena the mike then forget it we dun put the black bar in. It is not nice and if one scene got black bar the whole film needs to be black bar but scenes like the alarm clock already takes up the whole screen

U need to slow down the pace abit in the beginning, the toilet scene, not alot just like one or two second thing for andy to insert his voice over intro, no worries we can do it during editing. THis is important cuz we need to have pacing throughout the film. the scenes that shd be slow are the HDB jump floor scene. Dun worries it should be 4 min + top most.

U can start with watever style of editing u want on the current shoots we have now but re to save the entire good takes in entirety so that we can use them again. I like the car one, not bad. Furthermore where is the scene where ANdy bought a new car AND drives off? the first part have but the driving off? we just put everything in and then start cutting here and there.

ok i am not sure if there is a standard thickness of the black bar...but its an effect called letterhead.

anyway...
when i tok abt the toliet scene...u did a side view and a front view....do take note...ur side view is whistling...but ur front is not whistling....how can i merge two shots together?

for the fps...its was on 29 fps...seems like default settings...but i change it to 25 liao...

and its 4:3....
not widescreen...duh....trust me leh hehehe editor leh... hahaha i won be putting it in HD format cos our cam also not HD lol....

anyway... have done the scenes with some sound effects already...haha

oh ya Director BOSS!!!(hehe) currently the clip i made is already 3 min plus... u still wanna slow mo things...it might extend to 6-7 mins. bare in mind...we only did half of the production ... lol...tts why i am going to upload the new video i did later...and pls see where u wanna shorten...else no time liao... as i also nid to work on the other assignment...lol

Comments on scenes

If that is the case we adopt the black bar for the entire film. It is also a good thing, we can put in subtitles as we have hokkien dialect esp in the dialogues. Im not sure is it because the attached video is a downscaled version but i feel that sample's black bars are too thin, it should be of a standard height, Cal can u check it out.

As for the sample video, Do no worry about certain scenes not having sound, we did not record anyway because most are covered by voice overs later from Andy. The sample video is too fast, there shd be some moments where there are slow fade in or out but not to worry, all this will sort out during post production phase during editing. Key thing ew must focus on now is getting the scenes right, lights right.

So, there should not be any need to do any reshoots (thank god I was fearing that) and we should carry on as planned, next shoot is on schedule and as i mentioned if we can wrap things up on 3 nov we can conc on the post production earlier.

As for earlier comments on the ending let me think up of some other way to end it instead of the Darren - save Andy thing for now we conc on Darren call Andy before he jumps scene.

nice photos uploaded by the way. One more thing, the Benny whistling thing, there should be a 2nd take after this particular one that u took Cal, try to look in the tape again. Also please check the FPS for the video which u imported in, as well as the settings, no widescreen, should be 4:3 scale format.

Feedback on 21 Oct 2007 shoots

Cal just told me some of our "good takes" can see the mike in the background :( lets see how many scenes are affected before we decide do we need a reshoot. If it is just one or two, my feeling is let it be ba, we got a good story let them deduct a few points for that.

If can we refrain from doing any reshoots esp kopitiam scene. So next time remember not to shoot based on the white lines. Eagerly waiting your report Cal

21 Oct Shoot Success

Yo guys,

Hope you guys and gals have a good rest. All in all I think we did a good job for the scenes and we all chipped in on ideas to improve our shoots. Here is a summary of the scenes we taken:

We did more than we planned for which is a good thing, been a shiong day for all so rest well. We will leave it to Calvin now to extract the scenes out proper.

5.) Suicide Scene

I reccommend we do that in the above order for 3 Nov. Hopefully we can nail it in one day so not everyone will need to stay back at my house to sleep.

U guys can still stay back to sleep if u guys want to esp if it is late and ideally we can start editing on 4 Nov since we catered for it, push the dates forward. Editing wise, we will need at least Calvin and andy around to add in the voice over but if can Jos and Les can help give comments on the editing will be cool too.

Cal im interested in the photos we took yesterday can you post some here too hahaha. ANyway give us early warning if there are any problems with the takes we took so we can plan (i hope not) again.

BTW about the ending i tot of wat Jonathon said last night and I tot of a way to insert a comic twist to the ending.

While ANdy is thinking of jumping we show abit of the place right we show at high floor but never indicate that he is on which floor....

Imagine I come in and rescue Andy correct, but instead of being so sad ending i scold him for being silly and say that jumping off SECOND FLOOR wont die anyway and we show the cam as they are actually on 2nd floor hahaha.

I have just emailed all of you the script. It has been change to better reflect the suggestions everyone had and hopefully I remembered all of them haha. Let me know if I missed out on any before next week's meeting.

Hi Guys, I am almost done with the script. Like wat Cal mentioned this wed is for us to know more abt the script. It is also to let u guys give in more tips and ideas into the script. I have laid the backbone for it, and it will be good to finetune or enhance the story or any nice ideas or angles u guys want this to be filmed at.

Thereafter once we are happy with the script we dun touch it anymore until we start filming. We then concentrate on coming up with the storyboard so that everyone knows roughly wat angles, style is needed for each shot. We can also concentrate on coming up with the locations, schedules and logistic issues from then on.

So lets all try to meet up on Wed so that everyone knows they have a stake in this. So far so good so lets make this last few modules a good one to remember.

Firm up of the Script

Hi guys and gals,

After the meeting on Sun, we have more or less firm up the script and ideas. Will brief Audrey more when we meet again but I will just put up a basic flow of the idea here. We can remove/add ideas along the way and hopefully I can come up with a whole flow by this Thurs:

Start (Act 1):

1.)Black screen with words disclaimer saying all the following events and characters are fiction blah blah blah
2.) Show Benny (Lets call our main talent this atm) in interview position. We can do our 3 point lighting here. He will intro himself and will be the main voice over thru several scenes.
3.) As Benny describes himself, we show him doing his morning ritual, getting dressed for work. He is smartly dressed and seem to be doing well.
4.) Benny then describes how he meets Ah Seng his colleague at a kopitiam for bkfast and how he intro Benny to soccer betting
5.) We have a dialogue here between Benny and Ah Seng and Ah seng Describes how he just won 2K from last nights bet on Man U. Benny is interested and learns from Ah Seng how to bet.

Build up (Act 2):

6.) Benny starts betting and wins alot of money. Benny describes how he spends his money, buy exp stuff, car etc and neglects his work and friends. (here we have a short hp conversation with Ah Lee one of his org frd who jio him to go swimming etc but he declines)

7.) Benny describes how slowly he loses control and bets heavily but sustains heavy losses as well. We show him dismay as he watches matches on TV and a mid shot of him facing the mirror every morning but getting more bo chup in his appearance.

8.) We show him being harassed to return money (Pig in door idea here) and Benny describes how he desperately tried to raise $$$ (DVDs, cigarettes, sell his recently bought stuff) and how pple shun him when he tried to approach them (HP call, pple siam him in Kopitiam).

The Climax:

9.) Benny describes his desperate ends at this moment, show him sitting against wall, hands on hair, then he describes ways he tot of to end his life.
10) show benny trying pills (on floor vomiting foam), gas (dead fish in tank), car accident (show him across road and then smash watermelon on road)
11.) Finally he decides on jumping off the HDB. Just as he has one leg up, HP rings.
12.) Ah Lee called him and a dialogue ensues with Ah Lee berating him for ending at such a state and Benny being remorseful. Ah Lee offers him a loan to tide him over.
13.) Show Benny in org interview position as he says he is a change man and swears off betting.
14.) Black screen with words saying not everyone is as lucky and has someone to help them in such crisis. Warn pple to think twice before betting on soccer.

An example of a mockcumentary is the movie"Borat". I think Daren you gotta get this point clear if not I scare out of point. I a bit confuse already.

Hi, just read Darren's ideas and post. Agreed with his agenda and maybe we need to change the genre of our project as Johnathan just mention that ours is a scripted drama and NOT a mini-documentary. However if we still wanna go ahead with our idea, then he suggest we make it into a Mock-cumentary but it will be hard to execute and maybe out of point. Anyway we can discuss further.....

As for the meeting on Sunday, i cant make it at 12 noon. The earliest i can make it on Sun is after 4pm. And Audrey is working at 2pm too, so i guess we gotten make some arrangements. And just for info, i'm also reading another subj TDSZ230 which falls on tues.

First Meeting on 30 Sep 07

Sorry I had to go off early tonight, still havent recover from my flu. Anyway, with the exception of Cal, everyone knows the deadlines adi right. We have one month from now til TMA 02 aka the practical test for planning and after that exactly one month for shooting and editing.

IMO it is doable if we have ample meetings and plan ahead. Not to waste anymore time, we shd meet this sun and settle some stuff:

Agenda
1.) Finalize idea
2.) Finalize everyone's schedules
3.) Hammer out a list of schedules
4.) Share strength and weaknesses and Confirm everyone's roles and responsibilities
5.) Make a list of possible assets
6.) Hammer out a budget

Yes point no 6 just occurred to me. Money is sensitive and I think each of us need to fork out abit of change for some stuff:

1.) Car - Leslie car need fuel
2.) Production misc costs - anything we need to buy during the project
3.) Cast - If in the event we need cast, and no one works for free, wat are we looking at?

For point 4, lets everyone think wat they can help contribute to this project. I have editing experience before but not in iMovie so maybe Cal can help in editing while I give the majority of the shoot style.

We need someone good with planning and scheduling to work out the documents as well as plan our meetings and shooting days. Then we need one to be dedicated cameraman and two others for lighting and sound. One of us probably will be the main actor, lets suss this out on Sun, so hope everyone can attend.

I like the Norman guy film, it sort of gave me a base for the soccer betting idea, based on a "loser" guy as the main actor with funny parts

Planning Starts

If we are going thru with the illegal soccer betting idea, we will have to start planning liao. First of all, I suggest that each of us take on an "expert" role for each field.

Example, we shd have one person in charge of a certain equipment/duty:

Pre Production / Post Production
Planning/admin - All the gist of the forms, the holy bible etc
Script
Video Editing

Production
Audio - Someone to take the mike
Video - Someone to take the camera
Lighting - Someone to observe lighting
Director

As a small short, the director will be some one besides cameraman as the cameraman will be conc on the shots and stuff. The person who was in charge of planning and admin will help do the lighting imo. Like that we should just use 3 or 4 pple for crew, while we can free up 1 or 2 for casting.

As for misc stuff, here are some of the stuff i think we need to get:

Car? to carry the equipment
Cast? Of cuz we need to minimize and also find willing pple to act for us.
HQ Venue? Somewhere for all of us to put stuff, do meetings or do the post production stuff

For car I cant help cuz no car lol. Cast we will firm up once we firm up script. HQ i can volunteer my place as usual since only me and my wife but it is in punggol so up to u guys.

On top of these, we need to write up what are our avail timings for the month of oct and nov EACh and pass this to the planner so that we can see when we can meet for stuff and filming liao.
I will write on the synopsis of the idea on paper and lets all discuss and chip in ideas to make this a ideal script for everyone before commiting it to PC.

As for Darren's idea, here are some suggestions:

- for finding ways to return bookies' money, he can first maxed up all his credit cards and credit lines as a temp solution, subsequently, the banks caught up with him, threaten to make him a bankrupt, report him to his employers which will make lose his job. These can be illustrated after he fails to borrow any money from friends..
- this idea is just to make the main character in a worse state as to highlight the possibly worse part of uncontrolled illegal betting.

- as for the person who eventually lend a hand to him can be his girl friend whom he neglected so much since he has been hooked on betting. Even though his girl tried repeatedly to make him quit, even to the extent of threatening to break up with him but to no avail.
- in the end, its his gf who give him a lifeline. maybe a bit of touching element and female factor since there is no female casting yet....


Just some considerations for all to think and ponder, dont have to use if you guys think its not relevant. thks.

I remember you've told me about the ideas you have in mind. I think you can come out with the main body of the plots and such for us, pass it to us or email us and we will discuss the details during lesson. Swee boh? Looks like the ball is starting to roll as you have wished, good start.

In for darren's plot

Hi all

I think darren's plot is is interesting and feasible...in view of the time we have, and i feel his story show many facets of life, eg e part when e old frd come to rescue in e end...to know who is really good pal...so this kind of thingy pple can easily relate...
the locations, scene in hdb flat , void deck are accessible, and for e cast,maybe we can find talent among us....haha....if majority agree on darren's idea, we shld start planning the work flow...
n guys , i working shift...we need work a schedule, so i can arrange to change shift in adv...

ideas are simple...but planning will be a issue

Some things that good about darren's idea
- venues are easy to find and use like coffeeshop (leslie should be able to allow us some time).
- its a issue which we all have seen or experience before...hopefully not the bad side.

Daren's idea steady boh?

Hi all,
I suggest follow Daren's idea since most of you are too bz with work. Also I suppose all are so #$%$^$ bz until no time to log in to this blog so where got time to come out and discuss outside lesson time???...kekeke....anyway if all agree, we should concentrate on touching-up his idea instead. Daren told me he already got in mind what to shoot so I guess he will direct in this project. I also agree with him that the sooner we tie down on wat we want, we can start to shoot early bit by bit instead of last minute come out and cheong 2-3 days. This is not written project anymore. so how? On boh? Reply leh!!!!

I missed last night's class. Anything interesting to take note? I think next class we need to tie down timings and AL for the proj, and probably to decide on the proj we want to do.

I do not think it will be wise to start thinking nearer to the project deadline, there are alot of planning to do, and if we were to look for talents, it will be impossible to ask pple too last minute.

Do you guys fancy a quick meeting this Tue evening for most of us still around? At least we have more time to discuss rather than just during the break on Thu.

My EPL Affair

Yoz all,

Okay here is my pitch:

A Comedy based on a young guy's fortunes and misfortunes with Soccer betting. We show this guy's addiction to soccer betting and how he wins lots of money and how after a series of losses find himself in debt, bookies coming after him.

He tries to get help from his so called friends who ran away when they learn he no money. Desperate, he thinks of many ways out of his predicament which will be many short scenes like

1.)Selling illegal VCDS - Kena chased away by police
2.)Selling illegal cigarettes - Same
3.)Snatch theft or rob bank etc

But his cowardly self dismisses every idea as he thinks of the dire consequences. Lastly he cannot take it decides to commit suicide so he again thinks of the various ways to die:

1.)Jump
2.)Eat pills
3.)Kena hit by car

All with hilarous results and reactions from him as he also kia see. Finally he is so down he does some self reflection before a true friend whom he shunned in the beginning of the film comes with his family and save him by giving him a loan, then he understands the meaning of true friends and vows off betting.

Last scene shows him betting (again??) but not! its him playing PS2 with a young cousin and him being esctatic after winning hahaha.

Comedy in the sense show how he bungles while thinking of all the ways to get $$, how pple siam him and how he tot of dying. Serious part aka self reflection part is when he realised his folly and when his friend and family saves him.

Moral of the story is abt soccer betting and its pitfalls. Alot of the scenes are easy to do and i figure not so much props involved. Thing to worry as always is cast. Wat u guys think?
